Switching Your Winter Tires
With the worst of the winter weather hopefully behind us, it’s time to start getting your car ready for the warmer weather ahead.
One of the best and most important ways to get ready for spring, summer and fall is to take off those winter tires. Here are some tips to help you this season!
When Should I Switch Over My Tires?
There’s really no definitive answer to this question, and it can vary year to year. However, a good general rule is that if there are ten days in a row in which the temperature is above about 7 degrees, it’s probably safe to switch your tires over. Just make sure to keep an eye on the forecast and plan for freak snow squalls.
Get Your Tires Changed by a Professional
Unless you’re an auto mechanic, it’s probably not a good idea to switch your tires over yourself. Changing the tires on your vehicle requires specialized tools, a lift for your car and all of the expertise that comes with making sure your tires are on safely and properly. Instead, take your car to a licensed mechanic.
Evaluate the Condition of Your Wheels & Tires
Whether you’re switching your tires from winter to summer or from summer to winter, now is a great time to check their condition. Make sure the tires you’re taking off are still in good shape for next year before storing them. Evaluate the new set and consider replacing them if they’re not going to hold up for the season ahead. Check for things like tear, tread wear and suspension issues.
Store Your Tires Properly
Simply taking off your set of tires and throwing them in the corner of your garage is not the appropriate way to store the tires you aren’t using for the off-season. Tires should always be stored in a cool, dry place, and should be kept flat on their sidewalls. Keep tires out of direct sunlight to avoid any warping. If you don’t have room or an adequate storage option at home, most auto mechanics or car dealerships will store your spare tires for you.
