How to Rebuild Your Old Honda
The Honda brand of cars has been a staple in Canada for decades. Their flagship vehicle, the Civic, currently sits atop the best selling cars in Canada list for 2018 and it’s not even close. This doesn’t come as a surprise to car enthusiasts, given the Civic has been the best selling car in Canada for over 20 years!
Since the Civic is such a household name, many people who want to belong to “Civic Nation” will be looking to rebuild an older model they find appealing. As there are so many old Honda vehicles out there, finding parts is almost never an issue.
If you’re looking to bring an old Honda back to life, we’ve got some quick tips that will help you get started with your rebuild.
Source a Good Project Car
Once you’ve decided to undertake this project, your first task will be to find a good project car.
Ideally, you’ll be able to find a model that has good bones and is in good running condition. Given the longevity of Hondas, this shouldn’t be too big of an obstacle.
If you’re into rebuilding engines, you can be even more frugal and get a car that’s not fit to drive. Those will be very inexpensive, but require a lot more work.
Before committing to a project car, make sure that you decide what purpose it’s going to serve. Are you driving it daily, or is it more of a show car to take out on summer evenings? Is it going to look like the original model or are you souping it up?
Disassemble and Inventory Your Car
This next step is where you’ll have to practice some patience as you could be spending weeks, if not months, doing this — depending on the time you have to dedicate to the project.
You’ll have to disassemble the entire car and “bag and tag” every part that comes off the vehicle, so that you can reassemble it later on.
We recommend you take your time with this step.
The point here is to see what parts are good enough to reuse and which ones you’re going to have to replace. Take detailed notes. The last thing anyone wants when rebuilding a car is forgetting what goes where, what needs to be replaced, and why?
Take a look online for assembly and disassembly guides for whatever make and model Honda you’re choosing to rebuild. There are plenty of guides out there that will break down the process and the things to look out for along the way.
As the old adage goes, “Give me six hours to chop down a tree and I will spend the first four sharpening the axe.” Preparation is key!
Find High-Quality Parts
Once you’ve got the disassembly out of the way, you can begin the fun part of the project: the rebuild.
You’ll likely need to strip and repaint the vehicle and if you don’t have the proper setup, we highly recommend you send your car to a shop that can do this for you. Even the slightest mistake can ruin the paint on a car.
This stage of the rebuild will require you to source high-quality replacement parts for your Honda. This is where Logel’s Auto Parts comes into play:
