Automotive Recycling in Ontario

 In Uncategorized

At Logel’s, we are a proud member of the Ontario Automotive Recyclers Association (OARA). We choose to work with OARA because they have been the voice of the automotive recycling industry in Ontario since 1992. Working with the numerous members of OARA, they have worked to develop best-practice processes and promote the benefits of auto recycling.

As a member of OARA, we adhere to the Canadian Auto Recycler’s Environmental Code (CAREC). CAREC is a voluntary national standard for recycling end-of-life vehicles. Unfortunately, not all vehicles in Ontario are recycled in accordance with the CAREC standard. Of the over 600,000 vehicles taken off the road each year, 94% are recycled. However, over 2/3 of these vehicles are not processed in any systematic way.

When automotive recyclers do not follow a systematic process, it increases the chance that they will cut corners to save money. Unfortunately, one of the corners that gets cut is environmental management. It is less costly for recyclers to dump hazardous waste, such as oils, antifreeze, or mercury, than to follow the CAREC outlined process for disposal.

This year, OARA contacted the Ministry of the Environment about their proposed recycling standards for end-of-life vehicles. If these standards are implemented, all automotive recycles will be required to adhere to the CAREC standards. Until these standards are implemented, do your part to protect the environment. Make sure that you are recycling your vehicle at a facility that puts environmental management first.
