How to Wash Your Car in the Winter
Ontario drivers know: the winter months can be messy for your car. From snow, salt, slush and dirt, it’s hard to keep your car looking great in the winter. Plus, washing your car in the cold temperatures can pose challenges. Here’s how to wash your car in the winter!
1) Wait for a sunny, storm-free day
If possible, it’s a great idea to wait to wash your car until weather conditions are agreeable. Not only will it make washing the car easier for you, but it will also be better for the products you use. Most car care products are best used in weather of at least 10 degrees Celsius – even if it’s not that warm, if your car is in the sun it will be warmer than the air temperature. It will also mean the product will be less likely to freeze on contact with your car.
2) Use a waterless product
There are car wash products available that don’t require the use of water, so this is a great option for those colder months. This will help you avoid having to use a bucket of water or a hose to clean your car. It’s also a good idea to use these kinds of products in a covered garage, where the temperature can be a little warmer.
3) Make use of the car wash
You shouldn’t be afraid to use the car wash during the winter to get rid of all that dirt and grime from your car. Car washes are a good option because all of the cleaning is done inside, and your car is (mostly) dry by the time it comes out of the car wash. But it’s important to use car washes at the right time. Never go through the car wash immediately after a storm. Wait a couple of days, otherwise all of the fresh salt and sand on the roads will just end up on your car.
4) Use a high quality wax
If you don’t already use a wax after cleaning your car, it’s a good idea to start doing this in the winter. Wax gives your car even more protection from the winter elements, and a high quality wax will form a protective barrier to keep your car cleaner longer. A spray wax is a good option during the winter because they’re faster and more convenient to apply.
